The majestic New England Fall has brought us cooler weather and beautifully transformed the foliage. With the green leaves replaced by an array of magnificent fall yellow, orange and red colors our “wine” mind set changes as well. We think of warming, comfort foods such as hearty soups and stews and with that, fuller-bodied and spicy red wines. This weekend we will dedicate our wine tasting to several big, robust and yummy reds that will warm the cockles of your hearth. 2011 LVW red, Portugal $10 –This is a smooth, well-structured red with flavors of blueberry, black cherry and wild flowers. This Portuguese red is a wonderful every day red with an excellent value. A perfect match to foods such as pasta in red sauce, hearty stews and soups, red meats and matured cheeses.

2009 Vina Robles RED 4 – Paso Robles, California $17– This delicious red is a blend of four powerful red grapes: the structure of Petite Sirah, the forward fruit of Grenache, the spice and cherry of Syrah and the rustic character of Mourvèdre. An intriguing, youthful wine; your perfect dinner companion.

2007 Optima Dry Creek Valley Sonoma Petite Sirah (was $40, now on sale $32) – With a dense, black-purple, full-flavored rendition of one of Sonoma County’s most scarce and special red wine grapes. Its blackberry, blueberry and licorice aromas are balanced by rich sweet oak and vanilla. The intense berry fruit is integrated into a lush background of youthful tannins, and the flavors blend together in a rich, broad, mouth filling finish.

2007 Optima Cabernet Sauvignon (was $45, now on sale $35) Bold, dark and complex. Plum blackberry, spiced blueberry and dried current. Beneath are black cherry, toasted oak, spice and espresso bean. A dark delicious wine that delivers a rich, concentrated and complex experience. The robust profile makes it ideal for big flavor meats. The wine will cellar for years to come, adding roundness and complexity.
